May of 1864 was perhaps the Civil War's most terrible month. Dawn Drums begins at this crucial time and its action coincides closely with the sesquicentennial of the events it depicts.

Told by the voices of Abraham Lincoln, Clara Barton, Almira Martin, General Grant, and an assorted host of other Civil War participants, including a small group of Black "contrabands," Robert Walton's narrative offers an utterly unique and riveting view of the Civil War's last year.

Dawn Drums will enable readers to clearly understand the appalling war that divided a nation. Despite the Civil War's horror and savagery, the main characters of this truly gripping, historical novel emerge as heroes who, even today, remain inspirational and noble.

Dawn Drums eBook Robert Walton

Dawn Drums" by Robert Walton is an insightful look at the human condition during the last year of the horrific Civil War in which Americans on both sides of the battlefield died at a rate of 600 a day. It's a shocking figure by any standard, the highest daily battlefield death rate in our history. Walton's extroardinary story speaks to us through a myriad of voices including President Lincoln, opposing Generals Grant and Lee; the fatigued foot soldiers; the nurses who ministered to the wounded and the dying and the once endentured black men and women who got their first taste of freedom under the worst possible conditions. Walton's book is not about military tactics. It's a book about people, their frailtys and fears and their hopes for a better life once the shooting stopped. It's a book that should be read by anyone who wants to know about those led by fate into the internecine bloodshed that divided the nation for a time, but finally left us indivisible as a people. Dawn Drums eBook Robert Walton Reviews

This was a fabulous book that gives you much needed insight on a major part of U.S. History. It is an excellent book for students to read and would help them gain knowledge on important characters along with a great war in history. Studying the Civil War in history class was fun, but I only truly got one side- the winning Union side. However, in reading this book, you get both sides of major battles along with the whole war. Having this view of the war helped me understand history to a furhter extent. Overall, it was an amazing book to read with a great story line.
I recommned this book to anyone who likes to read, not just ones interested in the history of the civil war. I suggest that a reader has some common civil war knowledge because of the historical references. The story switches between different characters so that may be a bit confusing for readers who are not used to that style of writting, but overall its a great book with solid, relatable characters, and a topic that is both interesting and fun to read. I recommend this book to anyone and give the author my highest praise for such a well written book.
In Dawn Drums, Walton has created a historical fiction novel that doesn't seem like one. The characters, both historical and fictional, seem plucked from the environs of the war itself. If I had no background in the history of the period I would not have been able to distinguish between historical characters and the fictional ones. The characters are crafted in such a way as to have strengths and weaknesses that are the joint heritage of humanity; because of this many will be able to connect to the history though the lives of the characters in a way that often doesn't happen in a classroom. The afterward makes a great jumping off point to teach how the War Between the States effected subsequent history; I can imagine many lessons based on the later lives of the characters. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and will put it on my school bookshelf to be used as a common core resource for both history and English language arts.
Most of us have some knowledge of the Civil War from our school days; however author Robert Walton brings us into the very heart of a battle that changed the course of our country. With grace and respect he introduces us to the characters as their role in this epic event begins to play out. Some are well known, such as Abraham Lincoln, General Ulysses S. Grant, and Clara Barton; while others are not so known, and some are fictional, yet well played in the happenings of the times. The journey they take is long and dark, touching the very core of mankind. No matter what side they are on and no matter why the battle is fought, you will understand that the scars will remain for a lifetime. Mr. Walton brings to light personal sacrifices, emotional traumas, the battle for freedom, and the price that was paid.

I enjoyed this read. It is not written as a text book, but as a story that takes on a life of its own. Events, battles, and people become alive as you walk hand in hand with the players through the dark journey of battle and life during a time of uncertainty. Yes, it does become down-home and personal, as author Robert Walton weaves his words in such a way that you actually become part of the story before you. You find emotions will awaken within you as the battle rages on, and you will have a new respect and understanding of what really happened and how this event changed so many lives, including your own. It is a wonderful book and one I am proud to highly recommend. Truly exceptional. A must read.
I got the inspiration to read this from one of the author's college friends. We were both impressed by the reviews of experts on the Civil War. Upon reading it, I totally agree, and will especially gift it to students and elders alike.
A realistic view of day-to-day life during the Civil War, I found the book well-written and (unlike many books these days!) compelling enough to keep me reading big sections at a time.
Robert Walton has written a story -- no, many stories -- about the reality of the Civil War, the historical characters are appropriate to their personalities as we know them -- my husband is a Civil War buff and thought this an excellent rendition of events. I was quite drawn to the people and to the interaction. I think this is an important book for those reading about this era. It shows the hardships and the courage of men and women of all ages and races.
